Having just missed the last sailing, you decide to take the trail. On the route to Anderson Lake, the trail branches into many trails, some leading up, some down. Eventually the trail you are on has become so narrow from disuse that you can no longer find your way. You press on in the direction you were headed, even though there is no trail beneath you. Hours later you can't go any further, you are lost! Your only choice is to turn back, and try to get back to where you began.
There is not enough daylight left to return now. There was a suitable spot to set up camp nearby, so you spend the night there. All of the next day is spent following the trail back, but you make it. There is no choice but to spend another night waiting for the sternwheeler. Next day you are back on track, but behind schedule, and on your way to Lillooet.
You keep moving on foot for another 13 miles until camping. Soon you arrive at Anderson Lake, cross the lake and portage to Seaton Lake where you camp again. Soon after you reach Lillooet, the major town in this area of the Cariboo.
