On February 26, 1863 you hire two men for $175 to build the road house. The house will be right beside the new Cariboo Wagon Road, that will be completed this year. It will be 40x20 feet, with 2 rooms and a kitchen on the first floor, and a large attic. You and the men agree the roadhouse can be completed within a period of two months.
During the month of March, day after day, the men sawed logs, and used oxen and horses to move them in place. Meanwhile you start plowing the land using the oxen for growing potatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, melons, radishes, carrots, and barley. You go to Lytton and pick up liquor license and other supplies to prepare for your guests.
Finally, the Roadhouse opens on April 30, 1863. To celebrate the opening of the roadhouse a few Cornish miners played music to an appreciative crowd.
