Victoria
Horses cost $130 here, much more than in San Francisco, so you got a good deal. Victoria is dull and slow compared to San Francisco, so your are ready to start your adventure into the Cariboo country.
Talking with miners that have just come from the Cariboo, they tell you not to bother staking a claim. It is almost 4 years after miners started moving north along the Fraser River to find the mother load, and all the good gold claims in the Cariboo are taken now. Instead, you decide to get that ranch land you wanted, but if you wait too long all the good ranch land will be gone.
The ticket to Victoria costs you $40, plus $15 for your horse, so you board the ship and make your way up the coast to Victoria. There are lots of other animals on board too, and your horse seems happy. After a few days, the ship anchors in Esquimalt harbour, and you ride your horse for 3 miles to the Victoria town.
