MOSES, ME AND MURDER! (A Story of the Cariboo Gold Rush)
Author: Ann Walsh
Set in Barkerville in l866 this novel tells the story of the murder of a
young man who comes to find his fortune in the Goldfields of B.C. When his
decayed body is discovered several months after his disappearance, suspicion
falls on a stranger, James Barry. The Moses of the title was a well-known
barber in Barkerville, and was one of the key witnesses at the trial of
James Barry, a trial presided over by Judge Matthew Bailey Begbie, known as
‘The Hanging Judge’. An oddly shaped gold nugget is one of the clues to the
murderer’s identity, and the presence of a twelve year old boy, Ted, in the
story makes it more appealing to young children. This book is extensively
used by Grade 5 classes who study the B.C. Gold Rush, and includes
historical footnotes about the setting and characters. With the exception
of Ted, all characters and the role they played in this case are
historically accurate. ($9.95)

THE DOCTOR’S APPRENTICE
Author: Ann Walsh
A follow-up to Moses, Me and Murder, this book takes Ted MacIntosh, now 14,
through a difficult time in his life. Still plagued by nightmares, Ted is
treated by a doctor, J.B. Wilkinson, who then takes Ted as his apprentice,
becoming his friend and as well as his mentor. The story deals with coping
with fears, medical treatments and drug abuse in the 19th Century, life in a
Gold Rush town and the destruction of Barkerville by fire in September of
1868. Doctor Wilkinson was one of the men who helped ‘Cariboo’ Cameron carry
the body of his wife, Sophia Cameron, out of Barkerville. It was Sophia’s
dying wish that she would not be buried in the rough country she had grown
to hate. She got her wish: Sophia’s grave is in Ontario, Doctor Wilkinson
himself is buried in the Barkerville cemetery. ($8.95)
